🇨🇳 China just completed the world’s first commercial brain implant procedure China has successfully performed the world’s first implantation of a commercially approved invasive brain-computer interface (BCI). The device, called NEO, became the first invasive brain implant to receive commercial approval from China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) in March 2026. Its first recipient was a patient who suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident nearly 10 years ago, leaving them with severely impaired hand movement. The coin-sized implant sits on the brain’s dura mater (the protective membrane covering the brain) and uses 8 recording electrodes to detect neural signals whenever the patient intends to move. AI then decodes those brain signals in real time, turning them into digital commands that control a robotic rehabilitation glove. Instead of relying on damaged spinal nerves, the patient can move their hand by simply thinking about the movement. Most invasive brain-computer interfaces are still stuck in clinical trials.
