The Trump administration has until August 1 to define what counts as a “frontier AI model.” Under the proposed framework, companies developing these powerful models would have to submit them for government evaluation at least 30 days before release. OpenAI and Anthropic are pushing for the rules to apply equally to everyone. Their argument is simple: if they have to wait 30 days before launching a new model, competitors like Meta and xAI shouldn’t be able to ship similar systems immediately without the same oversight.
